The Ontario Mortgage Agent Course is approved for licensing as a level 1 mortgage agent by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA).

Level 1 Mortgage Agent Licensing

Individuals considering a career in the mortgage industry must complete the Ontario Mortgage Agent Level 1 Course. This comprehensive licensing program adheres to the Accreditation Standards, as well as the competencies and curriculum for mortgage agents set out by the Mortgage Broker Regulator's Council of Canada (MBRCC). This course is crafted with the input of education specialists and industry professionals to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the high standards of practice in the field.

The in-class course is delivered over 5 consecutive weekdays or Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is taught by seasoned mortgage industry professionals. The online course takes roughly 40 hours to complete. Students must ensure to finish their studies within 6 months of registering. Upon course completion, students are required to write a final examination.

Once you've completed the Ontario Mortgage Agent Course, you will need to apply for your level 1 mortgage agent license with FSRA. Below is a list of the eligibility requirements for licensing:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be a resident of Canada.
  • Have a mailing address in Ontario that can receive registered mail (no P.O. box)
  • Be authorized by a mortgage brokerage to deal in mortgages Work for only one mortgage brokerage.
  • Have a valid email address.
  • Successfully complete the Ontario Mortgage Agent Course.
  • Apply for a Mortgage Agent Level 1 licence within two years of successfully completing the approved course.
  • Be suitable for a licence.

This course is an education requirement for out-of-province licensees applying for a mortgage agent/broker licence in Ontario. 

 

Mortgage Licensing Equivalency Course

The Ontario Mortgage Licensing Equivalency Course focuses on competencies that are Ontario-specific to ensure out-of-province applicants have knowledge of the requirements included in the Mortgage Brokerages, Lenders and Administrators Act, 2006 (MBLAA), its regulations and FSRA’s guidance and rules that differ from other jurisdictions.

The online course takes 2 hours to complete and is followed by a 30-minute final exam comprised of 20 multiple-choice questions. The passing grade is 70%.

Upon completion of the course and quiz, out-of-province applicants will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the requirements to practice the mortgage broker/agent occupation in Ontario. Specifically, they will be able to:

  • Explain the legal and regulatory framework that applies to mortgage brokering in Ontario;
  • Differentiate between mortgage brokerage/broker/agent/administrator in Ontario; and,
  • Apply the requirements (including standards of practice) applicable to mortgage brokering in Ontario
