  • The course is completed online. Work through the required modules at your own pace during your course-access period.
  • No financial calculator is required. Unlike some provincial licensing courses, you do not need a financial calculator to complete the Nova Scotia Associate Mortgage Broker Course.
  • A final examination is required. You must complete the online course before booking your final examination. A minimum grade of 60% is required to pass.
  • You have six months to complete the course and exam. Complete the required online modules and final examination within six months of your original registration date. Course extensions may be purchased if required.

What You Need to Become a Mortgage Broker in Nova Scotia

The Nova Scotia Mortgage Broker Education Program is the required education program for individuals applying to become licensed mortgage brokers in Nova Scotia. The program is designed in line with the requirements established by Service Nova Scotia.

Complete the Nova Scotia Mortgage Broker Education Program

Successfully complete the required education program within 2 years preceding your mortgage broker licence application, unless an exemption applies. The program covers brokerage operations, supervision, compliance, customer protection and the responsibilities involved in operating a mortgage brokerage.

Pass the Final Examination

A final examination is required to successfully complete the program. The passing grade is 60%.

Complete the Regulatory Information Program

Mortgage broker applicants must also complete the Regulatory Information Program required by the Province of Nova Scotia.

Meet the Required Industry Experience

Unless exempted or holding an equivalent licence from a recognized province, applicants must have held an associate mortgage broker licence for at least 12 of the 24 months immediately preceding the application.

Meet Nova Scotia Mortgage Broker Licensing Requirements

In addition to completing the required education and experience, mortgage broker applicants must meet the licensing requirements established by the Province of Nova Scotia, including:

  • Be at least 19 years old.
  • Be a resident of Canada.
  • Provide the results of a criminal record check issued within 3 months of the application date.
  • Complete the Nova Scotia Mortgage Broker Education Program within the required timeframe, unless an exemption applies.
  • Complete the Regulatory Information Program.
  • Meet the applicable associate mortgage broker experience requirement.
  • Be authorized to broker mortgages on behalf of the licensed mortgage brokerage named on the applicant’s licence.
  • Confirm that you have read and understand the Mortgage Regulation Act and regulations and agree to be bound by their provisions.
  • Pay the applicable licensing fee.
