ADVOCACY DAYS
OTTAWA
MARCH 2022

Throughout March, MPC member volunteers from across Canada took part in MPC Advocacy Days – Ottawa.

These 45 volunteers have taken part in over 60 scheduled meetings with Members of Parliament, Senators, and their staff.

Most volunteers took part based on their active participation within their local chapters, with the addition of their knowledge of politics and the issues presented. There was also a need, at times, for local representation at the request of the MPs.

Our meetings this month were based on our recent policy recommendations to the federal government. You can review our recommendations for the 2022 Federal Budget made to the Minister of Finance.

More generally, the planning for MPC Advocacy Days, and our advocacy made to any level of government, is based on executing MPC’s Vision and Mission Statements:

MPC Vision Statement:
The unified, authoritative voice of the mortgage broker channel and an indispensable resource to our members.

MPC Mission Statement:
Advancing the mortgage broker channel.

Joe Pinheiro

A message from Joe Pinheiro, Chair of Mortgage Professionals Canada:

I want to share my sincere thanks to the team of MPC member volunteers from across Canada who volunteered their time to take part in the March 2022 MPC Advocacy Days. Our latest series of meetings with parliamentarians, and the first hybrid format (with virtual and in-person meetings) for this important annual event was a success.

It was an honour to have led our Executive last week to meet with MPs in Ottawa, in some of their first in-person meetings on Parliament Hill since 2020. We held great discussions, and heard how important MPC’s perspectives have become to elected officials, especially in the crafting of their parties’ recent election platforms. It is also gratifying to have heard about our team’s successes in their dozens of virtual meetings with MPs, senators, and their staff. All conversations – almost 60 as of this letter - were positive and engaging, a reflection of our excellent representatives. The MPC team is the unified, authoritative voice of the mortgage broker channel and an indispensable resource to our members.

My thanks to Paul Taylor, President and CEO, and to my colleagues on our Board of Directors for their collective efforts in support of our government relations efforts and our vital industry. The importance and reputation of mortgage brokering will grow through our members, and through our further advocacy initiatives. It is an honour to represent our 15,000 members from across Canada. Through our meetings held this month we aim to meet the needs of our members and their many clients while ensuring their voices are heard by policymakers. Effecting positive outcomes for the mortgage broker channel will help our great country’s economy rebound in the months and years ahead.

MPC’s consistency, and the collective effort, contribution, and participation of our volunteers over the last number of years has culminated to our association’s input and recommendations becoming essential to the government’s and opposition parties’ policy decision making. This can be seen in the election party platforms for all 3 major parties of the last 2 federal elections. Our meeting discussions focus on our members and their clients, our industry, and our communities. It is safe to say that the services of our nearly 15,000 members are needed by Canadians now more than ever. We, as the unified voice of the mortgage broker channel, strive to provide practical and effective solutions.

As the pandemic abates, it is our hope and intent to continue our momentum with ongoing regional Town Halls with groups of MPs and local MPC representatives throughout the year. Where possible, we will arrange these to coincide with our MPC events in your area, or other conference-type events, in person when possible and virtually when not.

We are continually seeking volunteers to assist us in our government relations efforts as it is essential that MPC have as many industry ambassadors as possible ready for such meetings. If you would like to take part in future events or policy discussions, we invite you to add your name to our roster at advocacy@mpc.ca.

Our sincere thanks to all parliamentarians and staff for meeting with us this month.

Parliamentary Meetings

We thank the following parliamentarians for our meetings with their offices during MPC Advocacy Days – Ottawa 2022. We also thank staff at the Office of the Prime Minister and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance for our earlier recent meetings with them. Finally, we extend our special thanks to Mr. Francesco Sorbara, MP Vaughan-Woodbridge, for hosting our Parliament press conference.
